Maduru Oya National Park covers roughly 58,850 hectares of dry-zone forest, grassland and reservoir habitats. The park is particularly associated with Asian elephants, while visitors may also encounter spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, water buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles and numerous species of birds. The reservoirs and surrounding forest make the park especially rewarding for nature photography and birdwatching.
Your adventure begins with a private pickup from your hotel or preferred location in Colombo in an air-conditioned vehicle.
The journey takes you through Sri Lanka’s changing landscapes toward Mahiyanganaya and the Maduru Oya region. Depending on the selected route and park entrance, travelers should allow approximately 5–6 hours for the journey, including comfort stops. Published visitor information places the journey at approximately 230 km depending on the route used.
For a more comfortable experience, I recommend offering this primarily as a 2-day/1-night package rather than a Colombo same-day return safari.
The highlight is a private 4×4 jeep safari through Maduru Oya National Park, usually lasting approximately 3–4 hours.
The safari explores forest tracks, open grasslands and reservoir edges in search of wildlife. Maduru Oya receives far fewer safari vehicles than parks such as Yala, Udawalawe and Minneriya, giving visitors a quieter and more natural wilderness experience.
Wildlife sightings may include:
The May–September dry period is particularly attractive because wildlife tends to concentrate around remaining water sources. Early morning and late afternoon are generally the preferred safari periods.
Recommended safari: Half-day safari
Duration: approximately 3–4 hours
Best times: approximately 6:00–10:00 AM or 2:30–6:00 PM
Add a peaceful Sorabora Wewa boat experience to contrast with the excitement of the jeep safari.
Located close to Mahiyanganaya, the historic Sorabora Wewa reservoir is surrounded by beautiful countryside and provides an excellent setting for a relaxing boat ride, landscape photography and birdwatching.
An early-morning boat trip is particularly attractive, when the reservoir is calm and bird activity is high. Guests may observe kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants, eagles and other waterbirds.
Recommended duration: approximately 1.5–2 hours.
For Flaner’s Tours, I would sell this as an optional enhancement to the main safari package rather than automatically including it.
Complete the journey with a visit to Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, one of Sri Lanka’s historically significant Buddhist sites.
The temple visit adds an important cultural element to what would otherwise be primarily a wildlife trip. Guests can explore the temple grounds, learn about its place in Sri Lankan Buddhist tradition and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this ancient pilgrimage destination.
Recommended visit: approximately 45–60 minutes.
Appropriate clothing is required when entering the temple: shoulders and knees should be covered, hats and footwear removed where required, and visitors should behave respectfully around worshippers.
Mahiyanganaya has a relatively small accommodation market, so we would avoid promising internationally standardized 3-, 4- and 5-star classifications unless the individual property officially holds that classification. Instead, Flaner’s Tours can describe them as Standard, Superior and Premium accommodation categories.
Standard / 3-star-style: Green Heritage Holiday Resort is a good-value option in Mahiyanganaya. Another option close to Sorabora Wewa is G.M.T. Sorabora Village Hotel (Pvt) Ltd..
Superior / 4-star-style: Kevans Casa is one of the better-known accommodation options in Mahiyanganaya and works well for you wanting a more comfortable stay.
Premium / boutique resort: Mapakada Village – Wild Trails & Lake Retreat – Mahiyanganaya is particularly suitable for you because of its nature-oriented setting. Elephyard Retreat near Sorabora is another attractive higher-end option.
